“So-So Breakfast & Inconsistent Quality”

  , Omaha
I stay at the Ramada Sioux City often enough now that I have gotten a sense of their strengths & weaknesses. The staff are very friendly & as helpful as they are able. Check-in and check-out are always efficient & pleasant. They are always receptive to the customers needs & earnestly provide whatever help they can.The quality of the rooms (and your sleep) varies depending on whether you get one of the new beds, or one of the old, squishy ones with the collapsed mattresses. I seems that only about one-third of the rooms have the non-squishy, saggy mattresses. If you have back problems, you may wish to ask for one of the newer, firmer beds. The rooms themselves are fairly spacious with ok lighting, a work desk, & a large mini fridge. The location is convenient in many ways & is easy to access from I-29. It is just on the perimeter of downtown and close to an array of restaurants. Alas, due to Sioux City's poor city planning, it is also adjacent to the railroad tracks. When a train is going by, it will wake you from the deepest sleep. Also, if the train is moving through you can NOT access downtown at all, so you could be trapped there for 15 minutes at a stretch. The complimentary breakfast is so-so, comparable to other hotels in the Siouxland area in its offerings. The menu never varies: reconstituted, watery, cold, scrambled eggs; link sausages that may or may not be browned, potatoes, biscuits & gravy; and, thank goodness, a waffle machine. There is also canned fruit cocktail, cereal, milk, juice, terrible coffee; & assorted rolls and toast of mediocre quality. The inconsistency seems to be due to the kitchen staff changes from the week to the weekend crew. During the week, the cook is excellent, with good attention to detail, albeit with mostly precooked food. She also, keeps things cleaner and more organized. She is truly doing her best with what she has. The weekend cook is very haphazard with the food preparation. Usually the biscuits are overcooked (often nearly burnt) & impossible to cut into with plastic knives & forks. The eggs are invariably cold and gross. The sausages are not browned with any consistency, so 80 percent of them are cold, gray & unappetizing. The weekend cook also hangs out & watches people eat with a creepy vibe that puts some folks ill-at-ease.Overall, this location does give good service, is convenient, spacious, but with some inconsistencies in the kitchen. I will continue to go here for business purposes.
