“A VERY expensive disappointment”

  , Eureka Springs
I wanted to give a friend a really special treat and stay somewhere special, and visit the Biltmore Estate -- the Ramada River Ridge's website had a package with jacuzzi suite and tickets to the Biltmore, and though it was even more than I'd imagined, I thought, "It's a once-in-a-lifetime trip," and booked. The hotel's website promises it's within walking distance of 25 shops and restaurants -- well, yes, if you mean shops like Dollar General, and restaurants like Kentucky Friend Chicken. In other words, it's at the back of a very run-of-the-mill shopping strip. And the room! Oh, my goodness -- you look UP at the parking lot -- it's like being in a basement. The hallway is dark and not well-maintained, with broken key-card entries, and the jacuzzi was more like a very large square bathroom, with jets -- the room is very under-lit, the refrigerator smelled stale, the whole thing was so shabby and gloomy, my heart sank. Little things were dead giveaways that the manager and staff didn't go that extra little effort to make things shine -- there were bits of refuse in the corners, pictures crooked -- you get the idea! The breakfast was the usual scrambled eggs in an aluminum bin, served in a room off the lobby, and they hadn't enough tables and chairs, so they'd set up some little folding tables in the lobby itself --I gave it five stars for location because it is a straight shot to the Biltmore, but in every other way, I'm still kicking myself for choosing to stay there.
