“Won't Repeat”

We checked in on a Friday afternoon, after a four-hour drive, to having neither refrigerator nor microwave in our room. This didn't overly annoy me until I chatted with another guest who also didn't have these in his room, but was offered a chance to "upgrade" to having these items in the room for an additional fee of $10.00. This was never offered to my family. (We would have gladly paid the $10.00 - we were staying for an entire weekend!) I later happened to share the elevator (twice) with members of the cleaning staff. The only indication of their vocation was the garbage bags they were carrying: they were wearing do-rags on their heads, and dirty jeans and t-shirts. After returning to our room after being gone most of the day Saturday, we found the bathroom flooded from a toilet leak. We were moved down the hall to another room. What an inconvenience! We were in town for a wedding, and had lots of good clothes and items we usually don't travel with, like shoe boxes and suit bags. When I asked if we were going to be given some sort of refund for the second night, the desk clerk struggled with giving us anything, and then finally offered to take a measly $15.00 off our bill! In the second room, the curtain was hanging off the hooks, the wand to move the curtain with was lying on the floor, the middle drawer was missing from the desk, and the door to the toilet area didn't close. When I picked up the ice bucket to go fill it, I found a plastic bag full of melted water in it. (Who knows how long that had been there?) I took it down to the front desk to complain, but the desk clerk was busy outside having a cigarette. I begrudge no one a break, and I even don't begrudge them a cigarette (I don't smoke), but for ten minutes this lady never once turned to look in the door to see if any patrons were standing at the desk needing assistance. By the time she finished her smoke and decided to come inside, I'd been joined by two other guests. They were waiting to check in. I felt like telling them that might be a bad idea. What a shame. The Ramada name used to stand for quality and excellence.
