“Ramada Groton, Great Value But Needs Work”

First off the location is great, nothing scenic but very convenient. A hair more than 5 minutes away from Mystic Village/Aquarium and conveniently located half a block down and across the street from the nicest Walmart I've ever been in. At check-in we were genuinely greeted and conversed with the clerk who I believe was the owner/manager. All my interactions with hotel staff were very pleasant and our check-in was quick and painless. After making our way to our room and touring the area we noticed our first complaint, the smell. Each section of the hotel we saw had it's own distinct odor. Sometimes it was barely noticeable, sometimes it was a strong unpleasant mustiness. The rooms were nice with everything being in working order. TV was a bit outdated and while I'd say 90% of everything was in great shape there were a noticeable amount of flaws (stained curtains, wobbly toilet, patch repaired bathtub, peeling documents on back of door etc.). This also applied to the pool facilities. While they were clean and functional you could see lots of patch jobs and chipped away paint/concrete. It was just enough to make the hotel feel crumby. I get the feeling that while the hotel is very well cleaned and maintained now, it probably went through a period of slum ownership that left many areas damaged. The continental breakfast was basic but adequate. My only real complaint was from the fact that housekeeping skipped over us during our stay. We did not have our "do not disturb" sign up and were out almost all day. Once again the clerk was very friendly and apologetic and supplied us with extra towels. If the price was a little higher I'd rate it 2/5 but since weekend rates can be had at $80 a night it merits a 3/5 at that price. If they can step up their housekeeping, remove the odor and properly repair/update the mentioned flaws, they could easily merit a 5/5 rating from me. Even if they had to raise their rates slightly to do it.
