“Comfortable rooms but poor service”

I am a native Staten Islander who spent 6 nights at this hotel in September while on leave from the Army visiting my family. I was initially shocked at the price of my stay when I arrived, as it was over 100 dollars higher than my quote. However, I booked through Ramada central reservations and I did not realize that approximately 17% hotel tax had yet to be applied to the cost. The room was small but comfortable. The hotel was generally quiet. However, there was an unpleasant, musty odor in the room. There was no comforter on the bed. When we asked the receptionist for one, we waited nearly an hour, but none arrived as promised. Finally, we had to go back to the front desk to get one. The room was not cleaned on two separate occasions. The front desk staff was defensive and questioned whether I left a "do not disturb" sign on the door (I did not). The receptionist apologized, but did not offer to make amends in any other way. When I requested to speak to the manager, I was told that he was not in the building and I would not be able to contact him. The staff at this hotel clearly do not understand basic customer service principles such as "the customer is always right." While this hotel is less expensive than others on Staten Island, in the future, I will stay at a different hotel, where hopefully basic management and customer service principles are followed.
