“Blizzard outside, Blizzard inside”

  , Hancock
I booked this room in houghton 3 days ahead of time. We timed out stay with a massive blizzard hitting the upper peninsula. We about froze on the way up to the UP from the milwaukee area. I paid 108$ for a 2 bed room. This 2 bed room had 1 out of 4 light fixtures working, smelled like a sweat sock, and had ABSOLUTELY no heat. This hotel room was nearly as cold as our car was on the way up. We called the front desk to let them know that we had NO HEAT in our room while there were 50 mph winds and 10 inches of snow on the ground. They said to us, "Yes, almost every rooms heat is out." Why they didn't bother to let us know before we arrived I'm not quite sure. We had the choice of staying in a Yurt at the backcountry skiing destination that night but chose this hotel in order to rest well, stay warm, eat good breakfast, and a have a shower in the morning. Well, would you believe that the TENT that was ontop of snow and a quarter inch thick the next night was actually WARMER than our hotel room? When they informed us that nearly none of the heat was working, they said they would send someone to look at it. (this is at midnight.... mind you, we need to get up early to drive an hour north to try and get to the skiing destination early.) at 1:45 am someone finally arrived and said that yes, the heat was indeed not working. They then handed us a TINY electric space heater that provided the heat of basically a single candle. They then said, "sorry." turned around, and left us standing in the room. I asked them, "geez, does this happen often, is it just because you recieved a foot of snow? They told me that yes, they had gotten too much snow. I know that the area has gotten 300 inches of snow for YEARS every single year, so how is it that ONE OF THE "NICEST" hotels in houghton just simply has no heat? At this point we thought maybe we could go to the hottub or the pool to warm up and relax before going to bed in our refridgerated room. Nope, not going to happen... they're both closed because of chemical treatment. Got up the next morning to a bowl of cereal that was included in the stay and some luke warm, sockwater tasting drip coffee. We were glad to get out and get to our tent we were staying at the next night. I am from Milwaukee and let me tell you, our 36$ motel 6's have better accomodations for much less than we paid to stay at this hotel. The worst part of it all was we were offered NOTHING for our trouble. No I definitely won't be coming back!!!
