“NON SMOKING HOTEL SMELLED LIKE AN ASHTRAY”

  , Moncton
We stayed at this hotel primarily because a) it was close to the Portland Airport b) the price was right and c) this hotel advertises itself as a non-smoking hotel. My daughter and I both have asthma which is set off my the smell of cigarette.First of all the hotel is quite difficult to find if after dark - getting to the reception was rather complicated as the main access was closed because of construction. The parking lot at night is very dark and not reassuring at all. When we got there we asked if there was transportation available to the airport - we were told probably - depended on the availability of the driver. Fifteen minutes later we were told no driver available so if you are looking for shuttle to airport plan ahead. Our room was dark, sub-normal, one king bed room. But for $70 we would not have complained had it not been for the smell of cigarette which was overwhelming from the moment we stepped off the elevator and I swear it got stronger as we moved towards our room. We opened the window in hopes of getting some fresh air in but alas the smell was still overpowering. Even the bedsheets smelled! We had to use our medecine puffers often while we were there.....When we checked out at 500AM the following morning I had to wait about 10 minutes for someone to show up at the front desk as he was gone to deliver invoices.....I had to ask the lady getting the breakfast ready twice for her to get the reception clerk. When I asked whether the hotel was entirely non-smoking I was informed that it was. I told the clerk that it smelled like an ashtray and our room reeked of smoke - our clothes even smelled when we walked out ! He did not really react or did anything.I suppose to get what you pay for - the bed was ok, and it would have suited our purposes had the room not reeked of smoke. Had the hotel been smoking with some non-smoking rooms then I would not be complaining. I travel a lot for work and we travel regularly for pleasure and I have never encountered such a problem when travelling in entireley smoke-free establishment.Well I know where we will not stay again!
