“Hardest. Beds. Ever.”

  , Austin, Texas
In town for my brother's wedding, we had 10 family members staying in this same hotel. We found that room quality was really hit or miss, some of our rooms had no hot water, some no water pressure. My aunt's room had no power at all. Each time we were reassigned to a different room, no questions asked. That was nice and all, but when we were supposed to have a reserved block of rooms on the fourth floor, and ended up scattered throughout the hotel. My room was pretty decent, all things considered. I had electricity (except for one bedside lamp and one wall socket that were dead,) hot, pressurized water; and no cockroaches. The room, and the hotel in general, smelled old but not entirely unpleasant. The worst part for me, and general consensus of all of us, was that the beds were almost unusable. Our king-sized mattress was as hard as a shipping pallet, the springs shrieked when you breathed on them, and the entire mattress wanted to flip over if you sat on the foot of the bed. Any plans for intimacy between my wife and I went straight out the window, as we would have been heard by all of Lakeland before the mattress collapsed and mangled us with springs as sharp as knitting needles. The TV hutch had an ancient CRT TV that got a few channels clearly. The local affiliates and Showtime were the best of them all, most basic cable channels (USA, TNT, TBS, etc) were unwatchable due to the static and waviness. Seriously, I'm no tech snob, but it's 2014; get an LCD or something. The "HOTAIR" SSN wifi never worked. Luckily, the hair dryer in the bathroom worked flawlessly. Take your victories where you can. The saving graces of this hotel disaster were the unflinching staff, always ready with a smile and another room key. The "Roxbury" lounge (What is love? Oh, baby, don't hurt me!) was cute, and had karaoke Saturday night, though I don't believe there was one person in attendance NOT eligible for AARP. My extended family just ended up taking over the pool area, which was clean and actually very nice. Since this is the only place in Lakeland I've ever stayed, I couldn't say it was better or worse than any other; but I will say that I've stayed in hotels in third-world countries (Thanks, US Navy) that were better than this. I really expected more from a Ramada, and will not be staying there again next I visit my newlywed brother and sister-in-law. I will try something more comfortable and consistent, like underneath a highway overpass or a park bench.
