“I'll never stay at a Ramada again”

We booked a King loft suite online and weren't told until we got there that we'd be charged an additional $250 (more than the cost of the room) as a "damage deposit" for the hotel room. The gentleman at the desk was condescending and rude, speaking to me like I was a stupid child. I told the woman at the desk that we'd have to pay this deposit using debit, as I hadn't left room on the credit card for an expense we hadn't anticipated, and the man (her superior) snorted loudly and said, "It needs to be on a credit card." Then they made us sign a legal waiver that said we could refuse the newspaper and have its cost returned to us, but the gentleman told me it was a misprint as the paper was "complimentary", and made me sign it anyway. The cost of the paper was not reimbursed, and we in fact did not even receive the paper. The room we had booked was called an "executive suite," but was in fact just a room, not a suite, as it had no kitchenette. It was very bare-bones -- we finally did find a mini-fridge in the cupboard of the writing desk! We went to the restaurant attached to the hotel for dinner, and it took two hours to get our meal and get out of there. Even after two hours, I had to go find the restaurant manager in his office and ask him to come out and process our bill -- at that point, my husband already had the kids in the pool, and I'd been sitting alone at the table for nearly 20 minutes waiting for my server. Our room card did not work to open the gym or pool doors, so we had to get a staff member to open them for us. The bed was hard, and I didn't get to sleep until 6:30 a.m., so I got 2 hours of sleep. In the morning, my husband tried to find a kids' show for my daughters to watch on TV while we packed up and got ready to go, but all of the family channels -- every single one that showed programming appropriate for children -- was blocked or required extra payment. I'm not impressed. I spent our entire stay avoiding the lobby area because the sight of the manager at the desk made me so angry. I am a professional with a university degree, and have stayed in dozens of hotels over four continents, and when I told him I had never had to pay a "damage deposit" on a hotel room before, he shook his head like I was lying to get out of paying a standard bill! In my experience, this is not at all standard, and because of that I will never book a room at a Ramada again. Anywhere.
