“An Old Hotel”

  , Ottawa
This is a very old hotel that has been repainted and re-branded. In my humble opinion, it does not meet the standard we have come to expect from Ramada Inns. It has no view (unless you count the backside of an apartment building with clothes hanging out the window a view.) It has off-site parking - one block away - that costs $12 per day with no in/out privileges. Although the photo used in its ads is a good picture of the entrance, it is also somewhat misleading. The hotel is located in a run-down neighborhood with no apparent good-quality restaurants within walking distance. (Perhaps the hotel should provide a list of places to eat. There was no information booklet in our room.) Our room had an a/c that was tucked behind the drapes, so we had to tie the drapes out of the way. It didn't matter because the a/c kept shutting off anyway. We had to ask the front desk for a list of TV channels; but not all of the channels listed worked. I'm sure the (single) elevator is the smallest in the history of the world. If you have claustrophobia, take the stairs. Complaints notwithstanding, we still give it an average rating because the rooms were very clean, the beds (we had a suite) comfortable and well maintained, the desk service was excellent and the complementary breakfast was very satisfying. In addition, the hotel is only about a five minute walk from the train station, which shuttles you under the Hudson RIver and over to New York (near ground-zero) in a matter of minutes. If all you want is a clean place to lay your head at night, avoiding the high cost of a hotel in New York City itself, then this hotel might be just what you're looking for.But be aware of the traffic situation after you check out. If you head north on Tonnelle (or Tonnele, maps and street signs spell it two different ways), you stumble into the worst modified traffic circle (roundabout) ever built. It took us 50 minutes to move 1/2 mile from the hotel's entrance. (Not the hotel's fault; just a warning.) Overall, it's an average hotel that is slightly overpriced. The only reason I wouldn't recommend it to a friend or family member is the location. There is apparently nothing nearby but the train station. We walked for about 45 minutes up and down streets looking for a good place to eat and finally settled on MacDonald's. We turned back on one occasion because the rubby-dubs made my wife nervous (ok, me too). However, it IS clean, comfortable and the staff friendly.
