“Friendly staff, but needs a refresh”

  , Dallas, Texas
Booked here on since all of the hotels in the downtown area seemed to be full more than a month in advance of our trip. We decided to come to Denver for the weekend for my birthday since flights were cheap but spent our first night in Boulder so that we could go to the mountains. The only accommodations available even close to the downtown area for our weekend, were this hotel and the Super 8 next door which are both independently owned and operated by the same company. The staff members are friendly and accommodating, but this hotel needs to be updated to modern day standards even though most of the furniture is new and the rooms have flat panel TVs. We were originally given a room in an external building with an outside facing door. The room had new furniture but the AC unit was falling apart while the vent was rusted, only had two bolts, and the vent had debris throughout. It was quite creepy looking and looked hazardous. The tile in the restroom was beaten up as well as cracked, and the walls were in urgent need of a coat of paint. I walked in, quickly decided not to place any of my belongings in the room, asked my girlfriend to stay in the car before going through any trouble, and returned to the office. I was accommodated by helpful staff and given a room in the main building after pointing out the issues and showing a photo of the AC vent. It was nicer in comparison, but I think we were so "weirded" out by the first room, that it made this one seem so much better than it was. The room seemed to have newer carpet and the same furnishings as the external room along with a newer Samsung flat panel TV. Tiles were also cracked in the restroom, the wallpaper hadn't been updated since Back 2 The Future (probably even before '85). The panels were also coming off of the restroom door and had been screwed on with sheet metal screws adding to the strangeness of the situation. The housekeeping staff did a very good job considering what they are dealing with as did the staff at the front desk. The staff definitely raises the ratings and make rating this hotel difficult, but overall it is not up to standards of a major chain. If you stay here, absolutely request the main bldg. If you have rechargeable electronics, you will have trouble finding plugs in the room. I did find an awkwardly placed plug just outside the RR door by the mirror which paired with my portable 4port usb charger saved us. We didn't expect the Ritz, but...
